Wolfspeed Stock (WOLF): Can the Tech Outrun the Losses?

Table of contents

Wolfspeed stock (NYSE: WOLF) reports fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year results on Wednesday, August 19. The release lands after the close. It marks the company’s fourth report since leaving bankruptcy.

That last fact drives everything else. Wolfspeed filed for prepackaged Chapter 11 in June 2025. The move wiped out roughly $4.6 billion of debt. The company then emerged in September with a repaired balance sheet.

But the income statement stayed broken. Gross margins remain negative. Revenue keeps shrinking. Management guides fourth-quarter margins below zero again. So this analysis asks one question. Can the technology outrun the cash burn? Investors now treat Wolfspeed stock as a high-risk turnaround.

Risk Management in the Stock Market: A Complete Guide

    The Restructuring That Reset Everything

Start here, because every metric flows from this event.

Wolfspeed filed for Chapter 11 on June 30, 2025. It was filed in the Southern District of Texas. More than 97% of senior secured noteholders backed the terms. The company then emerged 91 days later, on September 29, 2025.

Corporate Balance Sheet Restructuring: Financial Position Before & After Recapitalization (2026 Reference)

Balance Sheet Metric Before Balance Sheet Restructuring After Restructuring & Recapitalization
Total Outstanding Debt Burden ~$6.7 billion heavy debt load ~$2.0 billion streamlined debt
Total Debt Extinguished Baseline leverage $4.6 billion eliminated (~70% total reduction)
Annual Cash Interest Expense High baseline interest burden Down approximately 60% annually
Debt Maturity Profile Concentrated near-term maturities Extended out safely to 2030
Stockholders’ Equity Status Negative $447.1 million deficit Positive $1.02 billion equity base

The company then applied fresh start accounting. That created a new “Successor” reporting entity. So statements after September 2025 do not match earlier periods. Any year-over-year figure needs a check on which entity reported it.

Renesas also took a haircut. It had placed a $2.06 billion supply deposit. That deposit was converted into convertible notes, stock, and warrants.

Still, the current position looks stable. Wolfspeed held $1.2 billion in cash and short-term investments in March. Total assets reached $3.1 billion against $2.1 billion in liabilities. It also collected $698.6 million in tax-credit refunds during fiscal 2026.

Investment Takeaway: The balance sheet is genuinely repaired. That removes the solvency fear that ruled 2025. But it does not fix why Wolfspeed needed restructuring. That cause was operational, not financial.

    What August 19 Should Show

Guidance sets a low bar. The composition matters more than the headline.

Management guided fourth-quarter revenue to $140 million to $160 million. In addition, operating expenses should stay roughly flat. Gross margins should remain negative. Analysts model a loss near $2.45 per share. They expect revenue around $150 million.

Corporate Earnings Guidance: Wolfspeed Fiscal Q4 2026 Projections & Metrics (2026 Reference)

Wolfspeed Fiscal Q4 2026 Metric Guidance Range & Consensus Figure
Revenue Guidance Range $140 million to $160 million
Consensus Revenue Expectation ~$150 million consensus
Consensus Loss Per Share ~$2.45 per share expected loss
Prior-Quarter Reported Loss Per Share $3.26 per share loss
Gross Margin Guidance Status Negative gross margins guided
Official Earnings Report Date & Time August 19, 2026 at 5:00 pm ET

Meanwhile, chief executive Robert Feurle will host the call. Chief financial officer Gregor van Issum joins him.

Investment Takeaway: A negative gross margin means selling below cost. Until that flips, more revenue means larger losses. Growth cannot lift Wolfspeed stock yet.

    🔗Earnings Reports

    The Quarter Behind It

The third quarter shows the gap between guidance and expectations.

Wolfspeed reported revenue of $150.2 million. That figure sat inside its own guidance. But analysts had modeled roughly $209.8 million. So the number missed the Street by 28%. The loss reached $3.26 per share against $0.56 expected. GAAP gross margin printed negative 27%. Revenue fell 19% year over year.

Corporate Earnings Performance: Wolfspeed Fiscal Q3 2026 Actual Results vs. Expectations (2026 Reference)

Wolfspeed Fiscal Q3 2026 Metric Reported Financial Result & Variance
Reported Quarterly Revenue $150.2 million actual
Wall Street Analyst Consensus Expectation ~$209.8 million expected revenue
Top-Line Revenue Shortfall Versus Street ~28% negative revenue surprise
Net Loss Per Share $3.26 per share loss (vs. $0.56 expected)
GAAP Gross Margin Performance Negative 27% gross margin
Total Net Quarterly Loss $119.9 million net loss
Available Liquidity Reserve ~$1.2 billion in available liquidity

In fact, the signal is telling. Meeting guidance while missing consensus points to stale models. Analysts had not reset after emergence. Notably, the stock still rose 7.3% after hours. That reaction still drives Wolfspeed stock today because investors watch the balance sheet first.

Wolfspeed also refinanced about $476 million of first-lien debt. That cut total debt by another $97 million. It also lowered annual interest by about $62 million.

Investment Takeaway: The consensus miss is a communication gap. The negative 27% gross margin is the real operating problem.

    🔗Gross Margin

The AI Data Center Story, Read Carefully

This is the growth narrative. It needs precision, not hype.

Notably, management reported about 30% sequential growth in AI data center revenue. That growth is real. But it is also slowing. Feurle said the business grew 50% from the first quarter to the second. Then it grew 30% from the second to the third.

Wolfspeed’s own language stays measured. It calls AI data centers “a moderate but expanding part” of the business. So management itself warns against modeling AI as the near-term driver. That candor is worth taking at face value.

The commercial hooks are concrete, though. Wolfspeed partnered with LITEON Technology on 800-volt DC sidecars. Those units feed hyperscale rack power supplies. It also works with GE Aerospace on high-voltage aviation power.

Investment Takeaway: AI is a genuine second market beyond automotive. But it grows off a small base and decelerates. On $150 million in quarterly revenue, it cannot offset weak automotive demand yet.

    🔗AI Stocks

Gen 5 and the Technology Position

In fact, the engineering case is the strongest part of the story.

Wolfspeed launched its fifth-generation silicon carbide MOSFET platform. Notably, the company claims up to 27% better efficiency than rival 1200-volt parts. Engineers achieved it with optimized on-resistance on a 5-by-5 millimetre die. Smaller, more efficient parts let automakers shrink traction inverters. That cuts component count and battery size.

Semiconductor Architecture: Generation 5 Power Device Specifications & Thermal Performance (2026 Reference)

Generation 5 Semiconductor Device On-Resistance (at 175°C) Benefit & Primary Application
1200V SiC MOSFET 3.4 mΩ-cm² specific on-resistance 27% higher efficiency; enables smaller EV inverters
750V SiC MOSFET 2.0 mΩ-cm² specific on-resistance Optimized for solid-state breakers and fast EV charging infrastructure
Maximum Junction Operating Limit Up to 200°C junction limit Added thermal headroom and greater power-system durability

In addition, the manufacturing base matters just as much. Wolfspeed runs the automated Mohawk Valley Fab in Marcy, New York. The John Palmour Center in Siler City, North Carolina, supplies its materials. The shift from 150mm to 200mm wafers raises the usable die per wafer. That lowers unit cost once yields mature. Feurle says the company has “completely made the move” to Mohawk Valley.

Wolfspeed also launched the first commercial 10-kilovolt silicon carbide MOSFET. It targets grid and data center infrastructure. A next-generation TOLT package portfolio arrived alongside it.

Investment Takeaway: The technology and 200mm assets are real and hard to copy. The open question is utilization. A fab running below capacity prints negative margins, however advanced it is.

    🔗Semiconductor Stocks

    The Navitas Lawsuit as Strategy

Read the patent suit as a business move, not just a legal one.

Meanwhile, Wolfspeed sued Navitas Semiconductor in Delaware federal court. It asserts five foundational patents. The complaint targets Navitas GaNFast, GaNSlim, GaNSafe, and GeneSiC lines. Feurle framed it as defending research and development.

Intellectual Property Portfolio: Asserted Patents & Technical Protection Scope (2026 Reference)

Asserted Patent Identifier Technical Scope & Protected Innovation
U.S. Patent No. 8,169,005 Foundational wide bandgap semiconductor structures
U.S. Patent No. 10,998,418 Substrate integration techniques and advanced transistor designs
U.S. Patent No. 10,886,396 Proprietary power device architecture and switching efficiency
U.S. Patent No. 10,749,443 Power device architecture optimized for high thermal loads
U.S. Patent No. 11,888,392 High-voltage switching systems and advanced semiconductor module packaging

Notably, the target is telling. Navitas is far smaller. For instance, its 2025 revenue fell to $45.9 million from $83.3 million. It posted a $46 million operating loss and held about $237 million in cash. It is also pushing into AI data center power. That is exactly where Wolfspeed wants to grow.

Meanwhile, successful enforcement could bring licensing revenue. That income needs no fab utilization at all. For a company with negative margins, that is unusually valuable. Still, litigation is slow, costly, and uncertain. It cannot replace fixing manufacturing economics.

Investment Takeaway: The suit is a rational way to monetize research without using capacity. Treat any licensing outcome as optionality, not forecastable revenue.

    🔗Patent Litigation

Federal Funding: What Is Actually Committed

Here, the popular narrative most needs a correction. The timeline is everything.

In October 2024, Commerce announced preliminary CHIPS terms. They covered up to $750 million for Siler City and Marcy. An Apollo-led group added a $750 million financing facility. Coverage then described about $2.5 billion in combined capital.

But that came nine months before the bankruptcy. So any model built on that 2024 plan is outdated. The Chapter 11 filing superseded it. What Wolfspeed actually received looks different. It collected $698.6 million in tax-credit refunds during fiscal 2026. It also secured the restructured debt package.

The strategic logic still holds, though. For example, officials treat silicon carbide as a critical material. Foreign concentration in the supply chain is a known risk. Domestic 200mm capacity also serves defense and aerospace.

Investment Takeaway: Verify which federal money has actually arrived. The tax-credit refunds are real cash. The 2024 CHIPS terms were preliminary, and they predate a bankruptcy.

    🔗CHIPS Act

Wolfspeed Stock: Valuation and the Bear Case

Market positioning shows how contested this share is.

Wolfspeed stock has swung across an enormous range. It moved from roughly $8 to $81 in twelve months. That reflects the restructuring, the equity reset, and a squeeze. Short interest has run near 60% of shares. That extreme reading signals deep skepticism. It also signals a violent upside on any good news. The stock traded near $38.55 after the third-quarter report. Many traders simply follow it as a wolf stock by its ticker.

Valuation Multiples & Market Sentiment: Comprehensive Metrics Breakdown (2026 Reference)

Valuation Marker & Financial Metric Current Market Figure & Reading
12-Month Trading Range ~$8.00 to $81.00 per share spread
Recent Market Price ~$38.55 per share execution price
52-Week Price High ~$40.25 resistance level
Short Interest Percentage ~60% of total float sold short
Available Liquidity Reserve ~$1.2 billion liquid reserve
Debt Maturity Profile Extended out safely to 2030

Still, the bull case has real support. It rests on a repaired balance sheet and $1.2 billion in liquidity. Maturities now stretch to 2030. The 200mm asset base is differentiated. AI data centers add a second market. Patent enforcement adds optionality.

    🔗Short Squeeze

By contrast, the bear case is arithmetic. Revenue is falling 19% year over year. Gross margin sits at negative 27% and stays negative. The company burns cash each quarter. Its last quarter missed consensus by 28%. And 60% short interest drives price on positioning, not fundamentals.

Investment Takeaway: WOLF stock is a high-volatility restructuring play, not a growth story. Size positions for moves unrelated to quarterly operating results.

    🔗Valuation Ratios

    The Risks That Matter

Most risks here trace to money, not physics.

First, negative margins matter most. GAAP gross margin of negative 27% still stands. Guidance keeps it negative. So each unit sold deepens the loss. Declining revenue makes it worse. Sales fell 19% year over year. Scale is moving away from the fixed-cost base.

    🔗Risk Management

In addition, accounting adds friction. Fresh start rules break comparability with prior periods. Positioning adds risk as well. Near 60% short interest distorts price in both directions.

Demand timing also matters. Sequential AI growth slowed from 50% to 30%. Automotive volumes still lag the capacity plan. Funding carries conditions as well. The 2024 CHIPS terms were non-binding and predated the bankruptcy. And patent enforcement stays slow and uncertain.

Risk Assessment: Comprehensive Operational & Structural Risk Factors (2026 Reference)

Identified Risk Vector Strategic Significance & Diagnostic Implication
Negative Gross Margins -27% margin performance guided negative, meaning each incremental sale deepens operating losses.
Declining Revenue Trajectory Sales fell 19% year-over-year, moving operating scale further away from fixed cost absorption.
Fresh Start Accounting Post-emergence financial statements are structurally non-comparable to prior historical periods.
Extreme Short Interest ~60% short interest float heavily disconnects share price action from underlying operational fundamentals.
AI Growth Deceleration Sequential AI-related growth slowed noticeably from ~50% down to ~30%.
Automotive Market Softness The core electric vehicle (EV) market has failed to deliver anticipated structural production volumes.
Federal Funding Uncertainty 2024 CHIPS Act terms were preliminary and predated corporate bankruptcy proceedings.
Litigation & Patent Risk Intellectual property enforcement and patent litigation remain slow, costly, and inherently uncertain.

    Common Questions on Wolfspeed Stock

    When does Wolfspeed report earnings?

Wolfspeed reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. The call starts at 5:00 pm ET.

Why does Wolfspeed keep losing money?

Heavy factory investment and low utilization drive the losses. The 200mm ramp costs cash before it earns profit.

Is Wolfspeed stock a buy right now?

It suits only high-risk, long-horizon investors. The technology leads, yet the balance sheet still carries real danger.

What is the biggest risk for Wolfspeed stock?

Negative gross margin is the clearest risk. The company still sells products below cost.

    Did the bankruptcy fix Wolfspeed?

It fixed the balance sheet, not the business. Operating margins must still turn positive.

The Balance Sheet Is Fixed. The Margins Are Not.

So far, Wolfspeed has done the hard part of a turnaround. It erased $4.6 billion of debt in 91 days. Furthermore, it restored more than a billion dollars of equity. In addition, it pushed maturities out to 2030. It kept the Mohawk Valley fab and the Siler City complex intact. In fact, the technology is genuine. For example, the 10-kilovolt MOSFET and Gen 5 platform are real advances. AI data centers offer a second market beyond cars.

    🔗Position Sizing

So Wolfspeed stock now trades on one question. Can the company fill its 200mm capacity fast enough? It must turn gross margin positive before the balance sheet strains again.

Watch four markers on August 19. First, whether revenue clears the upper half of guidance. Second, how deep the negative gross margin actually prints. Third, whether AI sequential growth holds above 30%. Fourth, what does management signal about fiscal 2027 utilization? The balance sheet problem is solved. The manufacturing-economics problem is not.
